Congratulations Jack Hart! The Spencer County Board of Education recognized Jack Hart for earning two first-time awards in Spencer County. He is the first SCHS Beta member to receive one of the National Beta Club $1,000 scholarships. Additionally, he has been awarded and even bigger honor in earning GEMS through the University of Louisville. The Guaranteed Entrance to Medical School (G.E.M.S.) program was established in 1988 and has given high school seniors from across the state the opportunity to cement their commitment to pursue a career in medicine with a guarantee of admission to the University of Louisville School of Medicine. The G.E.M.S students are given the opportunity to observe numerous medical specialties, participate in seminars, serve the Louisville community and build relationships with students who have like-minded goals of becoming a physician. After completing the G.E.M.S. program at the University of Louisville, students will automatically be admitted to the University of Louisville School of Medicine if they maintain a 3.4 cumulative and science grade point average in undergraduate work, score at or above the national mean on each section of the Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT), and participate fully in program activities. Congratulations, Jack, on such a great accomplishment!

Spencer County Families, We are aware of the threat for severe weather tomorrow afternoon during dismissal and bus routes. We are closely monitoring updates from the National Weather Service. We want to inform you that there is a possibility that Spencer County Schools will need to dismiss early on Friday, May 16th. At this time, no final decision has been made, and one will not be made until tomorrow. We strongly encourage families to have a plan in place in case a change becomes necessary during the school day. Any updates, including dismissal times, will be shared as soon as they are available through our usual communication channels. The safety of our students and staff remains our top priority. I’m pleased to share that Mr. Jason Cox has been named our new Alternative Programs Coordinator. Jason brings a student-centered mindset, a proven track record of supporting students, and a deep belief in the power of alternative education to change lives. We are thrilled to welcome him into this role at such a pivotal moment for both Hillview Academy and our district as a whole. For over 25 years, Mr. Bob has been the steady, compassionate presence behind our alternative program. His impact on students, families, and staff is both impressive and immeasurable. As he moves closer to a well-earned retirement, we’ll begin to honor and celebrate the legacy he’s built, rooted in care, consistency, and strength. Jason’s leadership marks the beginning of new structural and programming changes that will help Spencer County continue to evolve and grow, always with the goal of better meeting the needs of our students. With his guidance and the incredible staff at Hillview, the program will remain a place where hope is restored, paths are redirected, and students are empowered to thrive. Please join me in congratulating Mrs. Erin Demyan, who has been selected as the new Principal of Spencer County Middle School. We had a strong pool of applicants and an impressive round of interviews. Erin stood out as the clear choice to lead SCMS forward. With 18 years of experience as both a teacher and Assistant Principal at SCMS, she brings deep knowledge, commitment, and passion to this role. Our Office of Educational Technology has been made aware of a hazardous trend circulating on social media platforms, particularly TikTok. Students are being encouraged to insert conductive materials—such as pencils, aluminum foil, or paper clips—into USB and other ports on school-issued Chromebooks. The intent is to create sparks and smoke, often leading to fires. This behavior poses significant health and safety risks. Tampering with electronic devices can cause short circuits, potentially igniting fires. Such actions can render Chromebooks inoperable. We urge all parents and guardians to have immediate conversations with their children about the dangers of participating in this or any similar challenges.
